Last night Barbara Walters crowned Mrs. George Clooney as The Most Fascinating Person of the Year.
While Amal’s merits are extremely impressive – she’s a stunningly gorgeous Lebanese/British woman who studied at both Oxford and the New York School of Law, a top human rights lawyer, activist and author – it seems that Walters’ fascination lies mostly in one fact: that she managed to snag Hollywood’s most perennial bachelor, George Clooney.
“You could say that hers was the wedding of the year. It was really one of the greatest achievements in human history,” Walter’s boasted.
On a list that in past years has included the likes of Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, J.K. Rowling, and Hillary Clinton (twice!), you might feel slightly perturbed that our most recent inductee was voted to the top for wearing the perfect Oscar de la Renta gown down the aisle.
Walters, who features plenty of footage of her famous conversation with George Clooney in the mid-nineties in which he vowed, “I’m never going to get married again,” did mention Amal’s bigger achievements, but kept returning to her perfect partnership with George, as if her most impressive talent was her ability to entrap the world’s most elusive man.
While some have marked Walters’ appointment as sexist, and others as just plain unwarranted, what’s really most fascinating about this title is how engrossed everyone is with Walters’ selection.
Walters also commented, “Amazingly, Amal has been the subject of very little snark or envy… Maybe because it is heartening to think that no matter how long it may take, the perfect someone is out there for everyone, and that for us makes her The Most Fascinating Person of 2014.”
Well, someone sound the snark alarm, because Walters has definitely ruined that track record. And while we fully believe that Amal is pretty near perfect in every way, our fascination with her is already waning – which is probably just fine with her, since Amal has seemed to shun the spotlight since we were introduced to her in the first place.
Mrs. Clooney beat out Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, George R.R. Martin, Chelsea Handler, Neil Patrick Harris, Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift, Michael Strahan and David Koch for this year’s title.
